Making Traditional Japanese Steel From Sand!

I found this really cool video that goes into depth about how you make traditional Japanese steel.
And what's interesting is that unlike most places in the world where you can get the iron from mining the ores, in Japan there's no ores available, and instead the iron is processed from the sand instead.
And it's this same iron from the sand that ends up being made into high quality steel that is used in katanas (Samurai swords)!

Pretty cool right?
It just blows my mind how people can figure out ways a few hundred years ago to process iron in this fashion with whatever they had available.
